    ..

Before the spread of concepts such as 'religion', 'Shinto', Buddhism',

there were followers of a mountain-centred animism in Japan

    .

    Commemorative Series

  • I was born into a long line of ascetic monks.
My earliest recollections are of myself in the midst of six old practitioners of the Shugendō sect.
To achieve an understanding of the universe, ritualistic training was unrelenting from day until night, sometimes gentle, sometimes severe.
I recall it as the caring nurturing of a lost young lamb.

In a world changing at a frighteningly fast pace,

primitive religions such as these have all but disappeared

  • Dragon

    龍

As a symbol of enlightenment and guardian of Buddhist law, the dragon is one of the most significant animals in the Buddhist pantheon. It is one of the Four Celestial Emblems, guardian of the East and the rain-giver, bringer of prosperity to humanity and thus, although powerful and fearsome, in contrast to the malevolent European dragon, is seen as just and benevolent, often associated with wealth and good fortune.

  • Waterfalls

The idea of water, waterfalls, as sacred is one that arises from the understanding of water as a manifestation of Nature - the larger its scale, the greater our feeling of otherworldly grandeur.

From ancient times, humans have acknowledged water’s scarcity and significance. It is both revered and feared - floods for example - water bursting forth as a manifestation of the unapproachable divine.

On occasion, waterfalls have even been deified.

One of the 12 generals that protect the Yakushi Buddha.

    .

The Twelve Divine Generals serve and protect Yakushi Nyorai, the healing Buddha, who heals all diseases, including the disease of ignorance. They are also responsible for protecting the faithful and vanquishing the enemies of Buddhism. The generals are usually depicted with ferocious countenances, wearing armor and standing in fighting poses.

  • An achievement of self awareness will naturally create the state of eyes half closed; and the power of understanding all truths, lies in this state of eyes half closed.

My current way of life lies in attempting to maintain the state of ‘eyes half closed’ as I use the art of tsutsugaki to express my particular creativity, emotions and impressions.
