Photographic Retrospective 2000 - 2020
Since the establishment of his Tokyo studio Atelier Ren in 1991, Mitsumoto’s indefatigable interest in exploring the characteristics of metal has found expression and public recognition in significant works of architecture and private commissions.
Unified by his signature motifs and mastery, the artist uses the traditional techniques of hammering (鍛金 tankin) and chasing (彫金chōkin) with gold and silver foil to express the unique Japanese perception of, and sensitivity to, Nature.
With pleasure we share a selection of works that represent the evolution of the artist and the refinement of his technical mastery and creative originality over a 30+ year career.

YOKOHAMA 2020
With such an established and long running career, it is no surprise that whilst most of the world was in lockdown in 2020, Mitusmoto was busy delivering a large scale series of commissioned pieces for Yokohama's new Hyatt Regency.
Strategically placed in the first floor lobby, this dynamic sculpture of large rolling waves in glittering gold foil and plating provides a stunning welcome

Reaching for the heavens on the top floor of the hotel, the calm waves of this sculpture quietly reflect silver moonlight. It hints also perhaps at the movements of eddying winds between sea and sky, the interplay of weather and light from day to night

Beautifully illuminated in the 3rd floor Club Lounge, this wall sculpture draws inspiration from the rhythmic sound that arises between the waves.
The gently curving surface of fine metal panels are layered to represent the wind blowing across the sea. The shimmering light between the waves is expressed with gold and silver foil. The horizontal bars in the background represent the surface of the sea.
